Tips for stay-at-home moms living in a post-divorce world

During your marriage, you and your ex-spouse chose to split responsibilities. While your husband went to work to support the family financially, you stayed home to raise good kids. Following your divorce, though, you likely must fulfill both obligations.

About 25% of recent marriages end in divorce. While you are not alone in choosing to end your marriage, as a stay-at-home mom, you may face some unique challenges in your post-divorce life. While focusing on yourself and your family likely makes sense, you also probably need to begin to build the foundations of your new life. Here are some tips:

1. Boost your credit score

Because you were a stay-at-home mom during your marriage, you may not have paid much attention to your credit score. Still, your creditworthiness is essential for securing bank loans, purchasing a new home or buying a car. Therefore, obtain a copy of your credit report as soon as you can. If your score is not high, work toward boosting it.

2. Rethink your living space

You may have some heartfelt feelings about your existing home. Nonetheless, your marital house may be both too large and too expensive to be compatible with your new life. Downsizing to something more manageable may be a better option.

3. Look at employment opportunities

Whether you receive support payments from your former partner, you may need additional income to make ends meet. If you have been out of the workforce for a few years, you may need to brush up on your marketable skills. Taking courses in community colleges or through public programs may help you land your first position. Do not shy away from short-term or part-time opportunities, though. Often, these positions lead to more lucrative ones.

As a stay-at-home mom, you may have some obstacles to overcome that other divorced spouses may not. Nevertheless, with a bit of effort, you can ensure your post-divorce existence is a success.
