Social media and divorce: What you should not do

If you are getting ready to file for divorce in New York, you may feel tempted to share the news with your friends and family online. Though you are not putting the most intimate details of your relationship on social media, your online activity could derail your divorce case.

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other popular social media platforms have become a popular means of communication. You might feel more comfortable with providing people with glimpses into your life and current situation than in person. What you post online can come back and hurt your divorce case. Here are some things you should avoid when using social media during your divorce.

Think of the consequences

Before you share. Think about the possible ramifications your posts and online activity might have on your divorce. Your ex may use pictures and comments about you partying and engaging in wild behavior to paint your character in a negative light, which can prove problematic if you have kids and are in a custody battle.

Talking badly about your spouse

Social media may seem like the perfect outlet for you to express your feelings. If you badmouth your ex-partner online, the things you say may get back to him or her, close friends and family. Your actions could alienate people, create bad feelings and drama, and make it harder for everyone to come to terms with the changes that are occurring.

Trying to trip your spouse up

You may believe your partner is hiding assets or doing things but lack the evidence to prove it. Before you post misleading information and things to bait your spouse into a trap, think about what can happen if things backfire. It is better for you to consult your attorney with your concerns and to follow her or his recommendations.

There is nothing wrong with using social media, apps and other online platforms while going through a divorce. Practice discretion and be conscious of how your actions may impact others and your divorce case.
