Former New York governor getting divorced

As many of our New York readers may have heard, David Paterson, former governor of New York, and his wife are divorcing.

Paterson and his wife got married over 20 years ago. They separated in September 2012. According to an article on the New York Post's website, last week, a divorce petition was submitted by Paterson and his wife.

Paterson is the second former New York governor to enter into divorce proceedings this month. Eliot Spitzer and his wife are also getting divorced.

Paterson's spokesman has said that Paterson and his wife have already reached and finalized agreements regarding the terms of their divorce.

Many different important issues can come up in relation to a divorce, such as division of property. These issues can end up being fairly contentious. However, this doesn't always prove to be the case. As the Paterson case shows, in some instances, a divorcing couple will go into a divorce having already come to agreements in regards to such issues. Divorces in which the divorcing couple is in agreement on all of the legal issues related to their divorce are referred to as uncontested divorces.

One assumption that people sometimes make is that a family law attorney is only of help in the divorce process if the divorce is contested. However, family law attorneys can assist in many ways when it comes to uncontested divorces. Experienced family law attorneys understand the various rules and procedures in uncontested divorces and can take efforts to try to make the uncontested divorce process as smooth as possible.
