Child support can be a major issue in a divorce. Recently, a somewhat unusual child support request has been made in a celebrity divorce case.
The case involves a music producer that many here in New York have likely heard of: Timbaland. He has worked with many artists, including Nelly Furtado, Missy Elliot and Justin Timberlake.
Timbaland and his wife have been married for five years. Recently, Timbaland's wife submitted a petition for a divorce. Timbaland and his wife have one child together, a 5-year-old. Timbaland's wife also has a child, a 10-year-old, from a past relationship.
In her divorce filing, Timbaland's wife has made multiple requests, including a child support-related request. What makes her child support request somewhat unusual is that she is not only asking for child support for the 5-year-old, but also for the 10-year-old. Generally, in a divorce, child support is only requested for children that the divorcing couple had together. Timbaland's wife says that it is appropriate to request child support for the 10-year-old from Timbaland because Timbaland has “publicly and privately proclaimed this child as his own.”
It will be interesting to see what ultimately happens in regards to the child support request of Timbaland's wife.
As this case shows, unique and complex issues can sometimes arise in connection to child support. Thus, when child support matters arise in a divorce, having an experienced family law attorney on one's side can be very helpful. A family law attorney can help guide a person though the various steps of child support matters.
