Several life changes can lead to divorce

Couples get divorced for many different reasons. However, it is not uncommon for certain life events to increase the risk of divorce.

Psychologists continue to study and debate the different factors that lead to divorce among heterosexual and same-sex couples. Stress often plays a role in the deterioration of a relationship. Many couples can attest to the different ways stress can harm satisfaction in marriage. In addition to stress, what other factors contribute to divorce in the United States?

Illnesses can make marriage more complicated. When one spouse develops a serious medical condition or lives with a chronic health condition, the relationship can deteriorate. A recent study found that when women suffer a serious illness, the risk of divorce increases. However, when the husband is sick, the risk of divorce stays the same as before.

Another factor that contributes to divorce is changing jobs. Unemployment can increase the risk of divorce as the loss of income can increase stress and lead to arguments over money.

Children can also lead to divorce, even if both spouses wanted kids. Some couples have a hard time adjusting to parenting and may have irreconcilable differences that cause the couple to break up.

Other factors that can lead to divorce include:

  • Trauma
  • Living apart
  • infidelity
  • Having children move out of the home

The reason for divorce is different for every couple. Getting divorced is a very personal decision that can be emotionally draining. Individuals thinking about getting divorced should come to terms with their situation and talk to an experienced family law attorney about their specific issues to make sure all potential concerns are addressed during the divorce process.
